Pedigree Petfoods
Mars, Incorporated petfood subsidiary
Pedigree Petfoods is a subsidiary of the American group Mars, Incorporated specializing in pet food, with factories in England at Melton Mowbray and Birstall, Leeds; and offices at McLean, Virginia.
History[edit]
In 1934, Mars Limited, a division of the large American confectionery company, that had been based in Slough since 1932, acquired Chappel Brothers in Manchester. This company took low-quality meat and canned it as dog food, branded as "Chappie".[1]
New dog food brands Pal and Lassie were introduced during the 1950s.[2]
Mars Inc.[edit]
In 1968, Mars took over Kal Kan Foods of Los Angeles.[3]
In 1988, Kal Kan Foods changed the name of its dog food to Pedigree, the name Mars used to sell dog food outside the United States. The next year, Mars applied their worldwide branding of Whiskas to their cat food branding.[4]
In 1998, Kal Kan was the top-selling dog food brand but was going downhill. In the United States, its Pedigree Select brand became Cesar, used in Europe and Asia.[5]
The Pedigree Foundation[edit]
In the United States, The Pedigree Foundation is a philanthropic organization dedicated to helping shelter dogs find permanent homes.[6] The foundation, created in 2008, provides grants to 501(c)(3) dog shelters and breed rescue organizations, and help dog lovers adopt, volunteer, and make donations.[7] According to the foundation's FAQ site, it has raised more than $4 million to date.[8] In 2008, it distributed more than $1.1 million in grant money to more than 500 shelters and breed rescues. Use of awarded grant money by qualified recipients is virtually unrestricted, but is most often used for shelter improvements or veterinary care.[9]

Where Is Pedigree Dog Food Made?
When many people think of dog food, the Pedigree brand probably comes to mind. It makes sense, as the company is over 60 years old. That iconic blue ribbon logo is easy to identify and can be found stocked on the shelves of just about every pet store.
You may be surprised to learn that Pedigree Dog Food didnt start in the US. It was founded in Manchester in 1957 under the name Chappie. But who makes Pedigree dog food now? After being acquired by Mars and making production changes, the company eventually changed its name to Pedigree Petfoods in the 1970s.
Mars is a large parent brand of many companies offering pet foods, human foods, and animal veterinary services. A few popular products under the Mars corporation include Mars bars, Snickers, Orbit gum, Nutro pet food, and more.
Pedigree dog food is sold worldwide. In the United States, its headquarters is located in McLean, Virginia. But where exactly is it made? Read on to find out more.
Verdict: Is Pedigree Dog Food Made in the USA?
Pedigree Dog Food that is sold in the USA is cooked in the USA.However, based on our research, their ingredients are sourced from all over the world. This includes countries like Thailand, Brazil, and several Latin American countries.
Though it isnt glaringly obvious from the companys website, an inquiry to the Pedigree customer service team yielded a quick and simple response.
Pedigree reports that all their products are made in the USA at one of their many stateside factories. Unfortunately, thats about as clear as it gets. Weve researched other dog food brands that display an entirely different level of transparencyoffering ingredient maps, factory locators, and more. Pedigree doesnt have that.
There is a highlight page on Ingredients; however, it isnt descriptive for country or state of origin. This information section is disappointingly bland, despite the statement at the top of the page, welcoming label readers (thats us):
People take great care in knowing what they feed their pets. Food recalls are horrifying, and pet owners shouldnt be afraid of making their animals sick from simply feeding them safe products. Thats why it is so important for pet food brands to offer the most information they can about what goes into their products. Pedigree drops the ball here. Youll probably leave less informed on that Ingredient highlight page than on how you arrived. Below is an image of the amount of knowledge youll gain about any ingredient listed there. Brace yourself for this tidal wave of detail:
Following their websites Supply Chain Transparency link, youre directed to the Mars parent site. And it is all-encompassing for its many brands. Meaning there are bland and overarching statements about a few iconic ingredients. The focus remains on controversial components like cocoa, palm oil, and fish.
However, this information is clearly not exclusive to pet foods, as cocoa is a toxic ingredient for dogs. But we know that Mars also sells confections for humans. The Mars company has its subsidiary brands route back to their main website to congregate on a few shared pages of ingredient descriptions, regardless of the brand in question.
According to the Mars website, the potential sourcing of ingredients (though keep in mind, this would be across all of their brands) that are common in pet foods are the following:
- Fish: Thailand
- Beef: Latin America
- Eggs: most likely US, but also sourced locally in Europe, Canada, and Australia
- Soy: Brazil
In an attempt to verify ingredient sourcing, we contacted their Chat team. Here is that conversation:
Yes, Pedigree Dog Food is made in the USA and includes globally sourced ingredients. That doesnt mean it is excellent. You should know that many dog food brands are US-made, and plenty of other choices offer much more information and transparency about their manufacturing process and supply chain. Shop wisely.

12 Best Dog Foods Actually Made in the USA
Not all Made in USA dog foods are actually that, so finding good dog food can be hard. You need to know where food is made, where its ingredients are sourced, and where the food is manufactured.
For example, they may manufacture dog food made in the USAin this country, but the ingredients could come from other world regions.
Due to differences in pet food manufacturing regulations in every country, many pet owners rightly seek brands made in areas with the strictest laws: Europe, Canada, or the USA.
So here's what you must know about dog food made in the USA, what this term really means, and which dog food brands are actually made in America instead of simply being marketed as such.
Dog Food Made in USA
When you read the phrase made in the USA on a dog food label, you likely interpret that food is USA sourced (meaning the ingredients that the food is made with come from the USA).
However, that may not necessarily be the case.
Based on Federal Trade Commission's USA Made standards, AAFCO describes Made in USA pet food labeling as such:
all or virtually all means that all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of US origin. That is, the product should contain no or negligible foreign content. So just putting together ingredients in the US is not enough. Additionally, just getting ingredients from a broker within the US is not enough. If ingredients are imported, then it is very difficult to justify the use of the phrase Made in the USA.
Therefore, to assume that dog food with a Made in the USA label is made with US-origin ingredients is not unreasonable, according to what FTC and AAFCO encourage pet food manufacturers and companies to do.
However, as it happens, the AAFCO has no actual regulatory authority over this.
AAFCO regulations are merely used as a guideline for pet food companies to follow to have their products licensed by the state theyre sold. FTC is known for caring very little about pet food manufacturing laws.
This means that dog foods that are labeled as Made in the USA are put together in the USA, but that the parts that are put together arent necessarily of US origin.
So how can you be sure that the food you are giving your dog contains only ingredients sourced in the United States?
As many pet owners might have already found out, it takes a lot of legwork to find actual dog food made in USA brands.
The Dog Food Made in USA Label
You may be seeing this label on your favorite dog food brands, but what does it really mean?
Because of mislabeling dog food, some pet owners might start to wonder, where is Purina Pro Plan made really? To clarify a few things, here are the facts you need to know.
Dog Food Ingredient Sourcing
If you are looking for an All American dog food brand, you need to trace the source of the ingredients being used in the food first.
You cannot trust a Made in America label because the FTC hasn't been cracking down hard enough on companies loosely using this term to improve their sales. And this is not exclusive to the pet food industry, either.
Pet food companies understand the value of the Made in the USA label and have been taking advantage of it for years.
Since 2015, politicians have been encouraging the FTC to allocate more resources to investigate these claims, but to no avail.
Thus, pet owners are left to do their own research and investigation when searching for dog food. Made in USA brands were not just manufactured but ingredients are sourced in America.
Finding the source of ingredients, however, is far from simple.
Dog food companies that claim dog food made in the USA often intentionally mislead customers to think that their ingredients are also sourced in the US.
They do this by slapping the Made in America stamp on their bag and adding claims like No ingredients sourced in China or Responsibly sourced ingredients as a distraction.
These claims are designed to put your mind at ease, yet they tell you nothing about where ingredients were sourced.
If you're looking for the best grain-free dog food, you'd probably be okay with feeds high in grain content along with that label without ever researching where these grains really came from.
Consumers tired of pet food companies tricking them into buying fake Made in USA foods have previously filed lawsuitsagainst well-known brands for fake labels.
Several of these lawsuits include J.M. Smuckers, Nestle Purina Petcare Merrick Pet Care, Fromm, and Tyson Foods.
Very few companies offer full disclosure of where their ingredients are sourced.
And these companies will go above and beyond to hide the origin of their ingredients.
In fact, as I called around trying to find out ingredient sourcing details, I was regularly told by their customer service: Were sorry, thats proprietary information.
As it turns out, Im not the only one who has been met with such evasive answers.
The Association for Truth in Pet Food was grown out of similar frustrations, and they have set out to get all pet food companies to sign a pledge to fully disclose their ingredient sourcing information.
To date, there are only a small number of pet food companies that have been willing to sign this pledge and disclose where their dog food ingredients are coming from.
Most of them are smaller pet food companies grown out of distrust of the commercial pet food industry and those with nothing to hide.
Most companies are still hiding in the shadows and will remain there until the FTC starts cracking down on them.
This is where the pet owners' leg work I referenced above comes in. Which dog foods are made, sourced, and packed in the USA?
After many days of active research (and, technically, some years of studying the pet food industry), I've managed to compile a list of 12 dog food made in USA brands.
Spoiler: dont expect to see any of the well-known dog food brand names you remember from commercials.

Why Choose Dog Food Made in the USA?
Other than patriotism and support for the local economy, there is another reason you should try to buy dog food made in the USA.

Essentially, the United States has more regulations than many other countries.
The result is that food made in other countries is more likely to cut corners or include potentially harmful ingredients.
