The numbers are in! Which breed will be named the American Kennel Clubs most popular dog breed of 2022? As the worlds largest registry of purebred dogs, the AKC uses our registration statistics to rank the most popular breeds of the past year.

And for the first time in history, 2022 found the French Bulldog taking the No. 1 spot. This ends the Labrador Retrievers 31-year reign as the most popular dog breed in America.

The New Top Dog

The French Bulldog has moved into the number one position after climbing the ranks in popularity over the last ten years. In 2012, the Frenchie was ranked at No. 14. Since then, registrations have increased by over 1,000%, bringing this playful breed to the top. French Bulldogs held the No. 2 spot in 2021.

Breaking the Labs top-dog status of over three decades is no small feat. The Frenchie is a smart, compact breed, and they can fit into various different lifestyles, perfect for people all across the country. This petite dog was first recognized by the AKC in 1898; they are beloved by everyone from families to single owners for their charming and adaptable nature. They have surged in popularity in cities across the country since their small size and generally quiet demeanor make them good fits for apartments and smaller homes.

Top Five Dog Breeds of 2022

Aside from this massive move, the top five list looks a bit familiar. The Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, German Shepherd Dog, and Poodle take ranks two through five, respectively. Rottweilers moved from No. 8 to No. 7, while the Dachshund bumped the German Shorthaired Pointer from No. 9 in 2021 to No. 10 in 2022.

Other breeds that made major jumps from 2021 to 2022 are the American Hairless Terrier, Gordon Setter, Italian Greyhound, and Anatolian Shepherd Dog. Over the last ten years, breeds like the Cane Corso, Belgian Malinois, Giant Schnauzer, and English Cocker Spaniel have been making their way up the rankings in popularity, as well.

Newly recognized by the AKC in 2022, the Mudi and Russian Toy debuted at No. 150 and No. 144not bad for their first year! The Bracco Italiano became the 200th breed fully recognized by the AKC in July of 2022; as a result, it will debut in the registration rankings for 2023.

Least Popular Dog Breeds of 2022

At the bottom of the list (Nos. 197 through 199) are the Sloughi, Norwegian Lundehund, and English Foxhound. Last year, the Norwegian Lundehund was at the bottom, but they have surpassed English Foxhounds in registration over the past year. English Foxhounds, like their American Foxhound cousins, were bred as agile, scent-driven hunting dogs.

America continues its love affair with the Labrador Retriever, which tops the list for the 30^th year in a row. Just below the Lab, the French Bulldog takes the #2 spot, ranking above the German Shepherd Dog and Golden Retriever for the first time. And the Dachshund makes its way into the top 10 this year, knocking the Pembroke Welsh Corgi down to #11.

Some breeds rose in popularity, including the Belgian Malinois, which jumped from 60^th in 2014 to 37^th this year. Some breeds declined in popularity, like the Coton de Tulear, which dropped 50 spots from 31 to 81, and the Boerbel, which declined almost 60 spots.

Like clothing styles and baby names, dog breeds go in and out of style. Its likely that pop culture plays a large role in preferences. In fact, a study from the University of Bristol, City University of New York, and Western Carolina University found that movies, specifically durably popular ones, play a large role in breed popularity. For most of the 20th century, a breeds temperament, health, and longevity played less of a role in selecting a dog than its association with a popular film.

It goes without saying that in your house, your dog is the most popular. But what do the statistics say? The American Kennel Club has used registration data to compile the list of 2021s most popular breeds. As always, the Labrador Retriever tops the list this time for the 31st year! The Labs temperament and versatility are just two of the traitsthat contribute to its perennial popularity.

Most notably, the Poodle has moved back into the top five for the first time since 1997. In general, most breeds are about as popular as they were in 2020, with a few exceptions. The Field Spaniel, for example, moved up 24 places to #136, while the Puli, with its unique corded coat, dropped 21 places to #164. A breed new to the list is the Biewer Terrier, debuting at #83. The AKC recognized the breed in January, 2021 and the Toy dog has already won hearts and minds.

At the bottom of the list is the intriguing Norwegian Lundehund, one of the rarest breeds of dogs, which ranks 197 of 197 breeds. The Norwegian Lundehund literally, puffin dog would scale sheer-faced cliffs to raid puffin nests, bringing the still-live birds back to their masters.

In a time when there are more families with dogs than with children, its no surprise that the breeds vary widely, from large guard dogs, to agile herders, to tiny toy breeds and everything in between. 2021 Most Popular Dog Breed Full Ranking List

Who's top dog? Meet this year's most popular dog breeds

For years, the Labrador retriever was recognized as America's most popular dog breed.

But this year, a new top dog was crowned the No. 1 most popular dog in the country by the American Kennel Club and Gina DiNardo, an executive secretary at the AKC, stopped by "Good Morning America" Wednesday to make the big announcement.

Drumroll, please.

1. French bulldog

This year, the French bulldog, like Winston who visited the "GMA" set Wednesday morning, was named top dog, beating out 2021's most popular pick, the Labrador retriever.

"The No. 1 breed in America is the French bulldog," DiNardo said. "Not only is the French bulldog the most popular breed in America but Winston last year was the No. 1 dog in America for all breeds as a show dog at the American Kennel Club events."

"For 31 years, the Labrador retriever was the most popular breed but the Frenchie's been on the rise for a number of years," DiNardo continued. "We've been tracking his popularity and we figured he'd hit No. 1 sooner or later, and this is the year."

DiNardo said French bulldogs are popular especially among apartment dwellers because of their sturdy stature, easy-to-care-for short coats and wonderful temperaments.

2. Labrador retriever

Although it fell to the No. 2 spot this year, the Labrador retriever has long been a quintessential favorite, having been named AKC's top dog for at least three decades. Labs are active and have a friendly and outgoing demeanor and can live up to 11 to 13 years, according to the AKC. They're especially great with young children and have a wonderfully sweet temperament, said DiNardo.

3. Golden retriever

Golden retrievers, as the AKC notes, are known to be friendly, devoted and intelligent dogs, so it's no wonder they're a hit with families and the No. 3 most popular dog. Like the Lab, golden retrievers have a typical life expectancy of a decade, between 10 and 12 years.

DiNardo said goldens are great for those with adventurous lifestyles because they're very trainable and love being outdoors.

4. German shepherd

German shepherds are the fourth most popular dog and are often family dogs and K-9 officers. They're a good fit for homes with a big backyard because they're natural herders and love to run around, said DiNardo. According to the AKC, German shepherds usually have courageous, confident and smart personalities and can live on average between 7 to 10 years.

5. Poodle

Not to be overshadowed, the poodle, with its signature curly hair, rounds out the top five most popular dog breeds. Standard poodles, according to the AKC, are active, proud and intelligent dogs that also tend to have a longer average lifespan between 10 and 18 years.

DiNardo said poodles in particular make for great buddies and love to cuddle.

For people and families interested in welcoming a new dog to the fold, DiNardo recommends a few considerations to keep in mind.

"The best thing to do is to evaluate your lifestyle to make sure that you have the time, the energy and the money to devote to the breed that you choose," DiNardo said.

DiNardo added, "So consider grooming needs: Do you want a wash-and-wear kind of dog or are you wiling to take the dog, like a poodle, to be groomed or groom it yourself? How much exercise do these dogs need? These larger sporting breeds and the herding dog -- they need a lot of exercise to be happy, both mental stimulation and physical exercise. So do you have time to do that? Do you have time for training? And then, of course, food -- do you want to spend a lot of money on food? Do you want to buy a $100 bag of dog food or do you want a little $20 bag of dog food?"
